Local Anesthesia

“Local Anesthesia sets out to emphasize the choice of a theme — flowers — which, when approached through the visual arts, usually falls into stock associations with the banal, the feminine, the commercial and the superficial, especially if we review the subjects that have historically characterized painting in our country, which almost entirely avoid anything soft or pleasing to the eye.

“The art that reflects Cuba’s history has been characterized by the exploration of political, Afro-Cuban, religious and sociological themes, or by what has been called the restoration of the aesthetic paradigm.

“In this exhibition, what may be attractive is precisely the unprejudiced choice of theme and the way it is presented. All the canvases are an attempt to dilute the idea of what is considered an artist’s pictorial style: each was painted in a different, clearly defined style — abstraction, expressionism, realism, impressionism. The title Local Anesthesia thus captures the idea of presenting a theme that, in the context of Cuban art, manages to dissipate existential and creative pains and discomforts.”
