Carlos Quintana is a contemporary Cuban artist known for expressive paintings that meld collective memory, fantasy and personal symbolism. Often featuring bald figures, Quintana’s work shifts between the grotesque and the beautiful while exploring the formal properties of paint. Born in Havana in 1966, he studied painting at both the San Alejandro Academy and the Institute of Design in his hometown. Exhibiting in Cuba since the early 1990s, he has gone on to show in Mexico, Spain and the United States. He currently lives and works in Madrid. Quintana’s works are held in the collections of the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana and the Gary Nader Collection in Miami, among others.
